Description of Workshop:
This course will provide an overview of the rationale, evidence, and strategies for implementation of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) in the treatment of substance use disorders. Participants will review the fundamental principles of treating substance use including diagnosis and evaluation, as well as major trends in both policy and use patterns in New Mexico. Further, clinicians will learn to implement CBT with emphasis on the identification of cognitive distortions, challenging perceptions, evaluating the cognitive triangle, and assisting clients in developing health coping and relapse prevention skills. At the conclusion of this course, clinicians will be able to apply the cognitive model in a variety of case presentations in an evidence based and efficacious manner.

a. Rationale and evidence for the use of CBT in the treatment of SUD
b. Implementation of CBT in the treatment context
c. Introduction and reinforcement of coping and relapse prevention skills
2. Learner Outcomes:
a. Learn the utility of CBT as an evidence-based treatment
b. How to effectively implement CBT strategies throughout the course of treatment
c. Methods for approaching special cases and populations through a CBT lens.
